Imani Williams is a young girl on a mission. Amid the chaos caused by aliens attacking Earth, she has one goal: to find her father. The story takes us through her journey filled with struggle and bravery.

A Tattoo Artist in the Shadows

In the dark and mysterious world of Dayblack, we meet Merce. He serves as the resident tattoo artist and a vampire. Merce's life is spent navigating the shadows while grappling with his own set of challenges.

Rachel's Dilemma

Meanwhile, far from the chaos at St. Michaels Church, Rachel carries Imani through the dense forest. They emerge into a city known as Dayblack. Rachel explains how they reached this critical moment. (You can find more in The Diary of Sweet Pea, Issues 1 and 2.)

ree

Rachel: I’m sorry, Sweet Pea!

ree

Imani: DON’T CALL ME THAT!!!

The tension escalates when a psionic wave surges from Imani, causing a violent explosion on Rachel's face. Rachel's eye is brutally ripped from its socket.

ree

The shockwave from the attack knocks over Rodamez, a hunter speaking to Merce. (You can read more about this in Dayblack, Issue 1.)

ree

Merce (thinks to himself): As if I needed something else to worry about.

The Power of Constructs

In her fear and frustration, Imani's eyes glow purple as she conjures a construct that takes the form of her father, Marcus. Merce, caught off guard by this manifestation, shows his fangs.

ree

Imani is overwhelmed by the memories of the alien chaos she just escaped.

Imani: AHHHH!!!

ree

With a surge of rage, Marcus charges at Merce. The vampire manages to dodge a right hand but is hit by a surprising left hook.

ree

Merce: What?!

Imani: Get him, Dad!!!

Marcus sends Merce flying into a tree. Before Merce can recover, Marcus is on him again.

Merce: What?!!

With brutal force, Marcus kicks Merce and slams him back to the ground with a powerful punch. Merce fights back, gritting his teeth as Marcus continues to rain down blows.

The Struggle Intensifies

In the background, Imani walks closer. Her nose is bleeding, but her expression is cold and determined.

Merce: I don’t want to kill, but you’re really forcing my hand.

Despite his threats, Marcus remains silent.

Merce: Not much of a talker, fine.

Merce vanishes into his shadows, only to appear from Marcus' shadow.

ree

Merce: Remember, this is your fault.

Attempting to bite Marcus, Merce is shocked to discover that it has no effect.

Merce: The hell?!

ree

Marcus retaliates with another punch, which Merce blocks before dodging a kick by disappearing into the shadows.

Merce: Wait a minute?

From behind Imani, Merce strikes her in the neck, knocking her out. As she falls unconscious, he watches the construct of her father dissipate.

Merce, now a bit stressed, glances back at the kid.

The Aftermath

Rodamez reappears from the hole he was thrown into.

ree

Rodamez: What will you do with the kid?

ree

Merce: I don’t have time for another kid.

Rodamez (thinking): She could become the perfect hunter.

Despite her potential, Imani remains just a 12-year-old child with limitations. She struggles against the might of Merce, who proves to be far cleverer due to his military background.

Conclusion: An Uncertain Future

Merce is nearly unbeatable; he has the strength and endurance that Imani can't match. Though Imani's constructs are powerful, they aren’t enough to contend with Merce's abilities. The conclusion leaves us wondering about Imani's future in this perilous world.

I hope you enjoyed this indie match-up and stay tuned for Season 4!

Please share your thoughts on the verdict. What would you have done differently?
