The Lost Art of The TV Series

TV series are taxing to make but the rewards are worth it. The communities that come together. The roles that make careers finally take off. The impact of thousands to millions to act on the vibration of change. TV series are intentional audiovisual pieces of art.

So, when did we stray from the path? When did it become okay to cram a bunch of information in a few episodes out of fear and lack?

The Beginning of The End

TV series, as we know them, fall from grace began in 2020.  When Covid 19 took the world by storm so did strategic reclusiveness. With the world shut in, people turned to their screens. Major changes around entertainment took place.

For starters, social media became shorter. The rise of TikTok, Instagram Reels, and YouTube Shorts turned entertainment into a three-headed monster. Quick, vulnerable, and excessive.  The concept of a “celebrity” now is more accessible than ever. People have less boundaries when it comes to their intimate life and others. More people are tapped into their creative power but still harbor limiting beliefs. This three-headed monster is always demanding its algorithm are feds. Otherwise, the scroll cycle would be the death of it.

Here Comes Streaming Services

People didn’t only get lost in their phones but also their TVs. But TV no longer refers to cable exclusively. TV condensed and maximized into apps. Netflix, Hulu, and MAX are not new., but their way of commodifying TV is. With commodification comes hustle. Streaming services work hard to put out as many new shows as possible but shortens their length to make up for it. That grind set has diminished the art of the TV series.

Rome Wasn’t Built in a Day

Netflix axes shows quicker than they can be released. This comes from a good place but poor execution. Every streaming platform desires a golden goose like Stranger Things and Wednesday. But fanbases take time to build. Technology has advanced show production but humans still have a long way to go.

When people decide to invest in a show, they invest time, energy, and access to their subconscious mind. Series like How To Get Away With Murder and Scandal needed longer seasons to cultivate their phenomenal fanbases. Getting people to sign onto a quick dopamine boost is easy. If you want long term success and loyalty, you have to let go of quantity for quality. Rome wasn’t built in a day.

How To Find That Passion Again

Despite many new shows being cut short, there are more diverse stories than ever!  World-building is more outlandish. There is more representation of the underrepresented and plots have certainly thickened. The art of the TV series doesn’t have to get lost in the algorithm. It can be a part of your process now. Tap back into your “why”. Why do you want to tell stories? Why that specific one?

Now is the perfect time to push forward. Once you start, all you need is momentum. Your TV series, comic book, film, or etc. is only as limited as your mind, not a platform.
